ABOUT US

What is WorldSkills Jamaica?

WorldSkills Jamaica is a member of WorldSkills International and an affiliate of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information (MoEYI) and the HEART Trust/National Training Agency (NTA).

Its key function is to support and enhance Technical Vocational Education and Training in Jamaica.It is an accessible resource for current and relevant information on skills standards, new technologies, sharing of best practices, as well as helping to shape current and future policies on TVET .

Since its establishment in 2002, WorldSkills Jamaica has hosted four National Skills Competitions: November 2003, March 2005, April 2007 and October 2010.

A Jamaican TVET system influenced by WorldSkills International standards, developing a competent workforce that will create a sustainable economy.

To strengthen the TVET system through the infusion of WorldSkills International Standards, equipping graduates for the Jamaican workforce.

Positioning TVET for Quality and Relevance.

Jamaica became the first Caribbean nation to participate in the WorldSkills International Competition in Helsinki, Finland in 2005.It then went on to participate in the WorldSkills International Competitions held in Japan November 2007, Canada in September 2009, Brazil, March 2010 and United Kingdom, October 2011.

In October 2010 Jamaica became the first Caribbean nation to host WorldSkills International General Assembly and Youth Forum.Approximately 200 delegates from 41 member countries attended and participated.

The hosting of the next National Skills Competition is scheduled for November 2012.The Competition seeks to facilitate a healthy competition environment where persons aged 14 years+ who are engaged in skills training through an eligible training institution, are able to showcase their talents in a number of skill areas. Participants are provided with the opportunity to compete for gold, silver or bronze medal.Winners of the National Skills Competition aged between 14 – 20 years (from selected skill areas) could earn a place in the WorldSkills Jamaica Training Programme for possible participation in the WorldSkills International Competition.

National Advisory

Committee

The National Advisory Committee will provide advisory services to the National Organizing Committee to ensure the successful promotion and integration of WorldSkills Jamaica in the Jamaican Vocational System. The committee is chaired by the Permanent Secretary,Ministry of Education, Youth and Information

National Organising

Committee

The National Organizing Committee (NOC) incorporates the WorldSkills Jamaica Unit/Secretariat (the administrative arm) and is the overseeing body for all Competition-related activities.  This committee facilitates the strategic directions of WorldSkills Jamaica, including the ratification of ideas/decisions arising from sub-committees. The NOC is chaired by the Official Delegate of WorldSkills Jamaica.
