The week October 5-7, 2010 was dubbed National Skills Week by WorldSkills Jamaica at the University of Technology, Jamaica and the National Indoor Sports Centre.
The competition which is the fourth staging saw over three hundred and seventy competitors from eighty-two institutions across Jamaica showcasing their skills in 40 skill areas. In addition there were over three hundred experts and forty volunteers facilitating the successful staging of this WorldSkills Jamaica signature event.
A large contingent of visitors observed the competition over the two-day period. These included 180 WorldSkills International delegates from approximately 60 countries, private and public sector, industry leaders, the prime minister, ministers of Government, community groups, industry partners, key stakeholders from CARICOM and personnel from in education and training.
The large contingent of students from several institutions across Jamaica also viewed the competition. They were all exposed to the different career options that exist within vocational training. They were afforded an opportunity to “try a skill” and submit applications for training programmes of their choice within the HEART Trust/NTA.
WorldSkills Jamaica is building on the success of the 2010 National Skills Competition to ensure all future national competitions are consistent with or surpass established standards
The WorldSkills Jamaica mission is to engage the passion of Jamaica’s people to pursue skills, trades and technologies as viable and rewarding career options. In partnership with the Education Ministry, private sector organizations and key industry partners, WorldSkills Jamaica, along with many dedicated workgroups contributes to vital economic and social successes by perpetrating a global movement that is committed to developing and promoting high performance standards among young professionals within the skills, trades and technology sectors. .
A total attendance of approximately 30,000 is expected to attend a typical competition.
National Skills Competitions provide the opportunity for people to see the best talent in skills, trades, and technologies up close. The competitions demonstrate hands-on expertise, talent and determination in over 40 skill categories. Hundreds of young Competitors from the fourteen parishes will gather to compete in everything from computer network to web design, welding to cooking, and auto-body repair to landscape gardening. Many interactive components, including education and career booths, showcase the many promising futures to be found in trades and technology. Visitors will also be able to Try-A-Skill at the competition.
National Skills Competitions are geared towards three groups:
1. Youth in school (junior high, secondary, tertiary, privately operated and HEART Trust/NTA training institutions).
2. Young adults ages 14 – 20 (Category I) and ages 21 and over (Category II) who are considering a rewarding career in skills, trades and technologies.
3. Parents, industry leaders, educators and youth influencers.
It is free admission for the days of the competition, as well as for the opening and closing ceremonies. .
Experts are appointed from the coach compliment and will judge competitors and award marks based on the objective and subjective marking scheme outlined in the test project.
Teacher/lecturer/instructor, industry personnel with expertise in specific vocational skills, and have the requisite skills and experience to train and support talented young people, to achieve excellence at the National Skills and the International Skills Competition, in accordance with the WorldSkills standards and occupational settings.
The Technical Description is the source document/curriculum for the trade and consists of the following: Technical/Competition Description, Project Design Criteria, Scope of tasks at the competition, Skill Management Procedures, Workshop Setup and the Infrastructure List.
This is the task that each competitor will be required to carry out over the competition period. The test project also specifies the length of time, marking scheme, material, ingredients, and hand tools that will be used to complete the task. The test project is currently available for free download under the competition tab on theURL: www.WorldSkillsJamaica.org. Twenty percent (20%) change will be made to the test project on the day of the competition, and the updated project will be issued to the competitors. (A briefing session will also be held for all competitors).
